As urbanisation in Brazil has intensified, so too has the issue of real estate vacancy, with the number of empty houses now exceeding the housing deficit. This paradox, where vacant buildings coexist with families in urgent need of housing, has drawn widespread criticism. Yet these empty spaces remain poorly understood. To address this gap, this research introduces the Zero Consumption Real Estate Vacancy Identification Method (ZCREVIM), which uses georeferenced electricity consumption data to detect vacant properties in Belo Horizonte. ZCREVIM provides a tool for the spatiotemporal identification of property vacancies and offers governments a practical means to monitor this urban anomaly.
