This proposal was submitted to the competition for the reconstruction of the São Cristóvão Palace, the historic home of Brazil’s National Museum, which suffered a devastating fire in 2018, resulting in the loss of invaluable scientific and cultural heritage. Our project embraces the profound responsibility of restoring this landmark, not only as an architectural task but as an act of collective memory and national significance.

Palácio de São Cristóvão, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

Conceived by a multidisciplinary team of architects, historians, engineers, sustainability consultants, and fire safety specialists, the project was developed through a comprehensive and collaborative process. It was selected as one of the three finalists, a testament to its innovative approach and deep respect for the site’s symbolic value.

Guided by principles of critical restoration and cultural continuity, we prioritised the architectural identity of the original palace. The design proposes the reconstruction of the historical façades, ensuring a harmonious integration between restored elements and contemporary interventions. We recognised that different sections of the building require tailored restoration strategies, according to the scale and nature of the damage, acknowledging the fire not only as a tragedy, but as a defining moment in the building’s trajectory.
